The Madness: Memoir of a Piano Tuner
Terry the tuner – an introduction
After finishing an apprenticeship at Steinway & Sons London in 1971, I became an outside tuner for the company, tuning pianos at the Capitals Concert Halls, Recording Studios and Private Houses of some of the countries best known performers. After leaving Steinway I became the sole tuner technician for the Viennese piano maker Bosendorfer at 38 Wigmore St. London, W1.
I now reside in Dartmouth, Devon, in the heart of the beautiful South Hams and offer Piano tuning services both locally and further afield upon request.
Here’s a summary of the services I provide:
To set the piano in tune so it stays in tune for a good duration.
The term used for the mechanical adjustments to maintain the action and keys.
Toning your piano ensures the evenness throughout the compass. Many pianos, especially modern ones after a few years playing, end with the hammers becoming very hard. This in turn produces a hard, thin, metallic tone. The process of toning will maintain an even, warm tone.
